Kris Davis is a critically acclaimed pianist and composer described by The New York Times as a beacon for “deciding where to hear jazz on a given night.” Since 2003, Davis has released 23 recordings as a leader or co-leader. She has collaborated with Terri Lyne Carrington, John Zorn, Craig Taborn, Ingrid Laubrock, Tyshawn Sorey, Tom Rainey, Eric Revis, Stephan Crump and Eric McPherson, among others. In 2019, her album “Diatom Ribbons” was named jazz album of the year by both the New York Times and the NPR Music Jazz Critics Poll. She was also named a 2021 Doris Duke Artist alongside Wayne Shorter and Danilo Perez, 2020 Pianist of the Year by DownBeat magazine, and 2021 Pianist and Composer of the Year by the Jazz Journalists Association. In 2016, Davis launched Pyroclastic Records to support artists whose expression expands beyond the commercial sphere. She subsequently formed a nonprofit organization to support the label’s work. In addition, Davis is the Associate Program Director of Creative Development at the Berklee Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice. Davis is a Steinway Artist.

When Kris Davis was looking for an image to represent her composition process, the „floating between micro and macro”, she found it in the organic shape of diatoms. These incredibly complex, small scale structures which are so beautiful when viewed from above: diatom ribbons. Davis’ perfect little rhythmic motifs are just the beginning: they serve as anchors for her fellow musicians, allowing them to drift while at the same time always staying grounded. They let the music flow, store up their energy. The musical backgrounds of Diatom Ribbons: currently one of the most subtle pianists, THE legendary drummer/singer/producer, the diva of the double bass and an exciting young hip hop sound artist explore their common spaces for a tribute project. Kris Davis, Terri Lyne Carrington, Esperanza Spalding and Val Jeanty play for the unforgettable Geri Allen. This collaboration inspired Kris Davis to intensively examine the various influences on her compositional language and to write more specifically for this formation. And the result is indeed organic. A pulse of bizarre samples in endless loops and free-rhythmical, inspired solo parts are layered on top of each other. Above all this, floats the calm of Kris Davis’ piano, which probably comes from giving her notes the same importance as she does to pauses. The special atmosphere soon attracted like-minded people, and as a result Davis was able to assemble an intimidating line-up for the recently released album. In addition to Carrington, Spalding and Jeanty, Tony Malaby, Ches Smith, Trevor Dunn, Marc Ribot and Nels Cline also perform on it. For the European tour, Davis reduced the line up to its essentials, which on the one hand benefits the micro-facetted structure of this music and on the other hand its live effect. (Sandra Hupfauf)

The charismatic saxophonist and composer James Brandon Lewis is the musician of the moment in the broad field of contemporary jazz. With Code of Being, James Brandon Lewis now presents his second album. The debut CD Molecular, which Lewis recorded with his quartet in 2020 just a few months before Lockdown, was roundly acclaimed as one of the most exciting releases in 2020 (Intakt CD 350). Code of Being is a powerful work consisting of eight compositions by James Brandon Lewis. Beautiful melodies are responsible for the magic of the songs. The four exceptional musicians, each with personalities of their own, create an urgent ensemble sound, moving through a broad palette of sound-colours, rhythms and moods, charged with energy. With a profound sense for lyrical melodies, tonal concision and dynamics, the quartet develop a spirited interplay, reacting to the tiniest atmospheric oscillations on the sound and groove level. “This is captivating music which it is hard to resist, especially the melodies with their thematic beauty.,” writes Florian Keller in the liner notes.

James Brandon Lewis (b.1983) is a critically- acclaimed composer, saxophonist, and writer. He has received accolades from NPR, ASCAP Foundation, The Robert Rauschenberg Foundation. He has been described as “ a saxophonist who embodies and transcends tradition” by The New York Times. and a promising young talent having listened to the elders by Jazz Legend Sonny Rollins. The saxophonist has balanced a deep, gospel -informed spirituality with Free-Jazz- abandon and hard-hitting funk-meets-hip-hop underpinning – Rolling Stone Magazine.  Lewis created Molecular Systematic Music in 2011 under a different moniker, it describes a twofold approach to music, braiding together the fundamentals of music theory with the ideas of molecular biology in the context of DNA. While not a molecular biologist, the ideas he expresses deploy the vocabulary of molecular biology as useful metaphors, while exploring new possibilities and relationships across disciplines. He has released several critically-acclaimed albums most recently highly touted Jesup Wagon and tours internationally leading several ensembles, and is a member and co-founder of American Book award winning Ensemble Heroes Are Gang Leaders. James was recently voted Rising Star Tenor Saxophonist by Downbeat magazines 2020s International  Critics poll. He attended Howard University and received his M.F.A from California Institute of the Arts.

    Christian McBride Inside Straight

In 2007 Christian McBride premiered the birth of a new quintet called Inside Straight with a live set at the legendary Village Vanguard.  Critics and fans alike raved about this acoustic powerhouse.  McBride went on to release two albums of Inside Straight on Mack Avenue records, Kind of Brown (2009) and People Music (2013),   dedicated to Mc Bride’s vision of straight-ahead, hard-swinging jazz.  After a hiatus of several years, Christian McBride brings Inside Straight back to stages in 2022 with a great new lineup and new grooving tunes for his eager fans.

Judging by its performance, the phrase „Inside Straight” captures this band’s aesthetic well: It’s both „inside” a comfortable groove pocket and „straight”-forwardly bluesy. McBride’s choice of tunes can be harmonically tricky, but they never deviate far from song form and tonality; they’re nifty exercises for a sophisticated and smart blowing quintet, a mix of veterans and young musicians that includes drums, saxophone, piano, and vibes.  And, of course, McBride shines at both soloing and keeping time: He wields a tremendously supple, round, and fluid double bass firmly planted in playing that which is unmistakenly jazz.
